"Never... has so much... been owed to so few... by so many!" Sir Winston Churchill '41 (after the Battle of Britain).
That about sums up our performance! My mother always told me that if I had nothing nice to say then to keep my mouth shut. Bollocks!! Then everyone struts about thinking that they are God's gift to the game. Last night, defensive responsibilities, more often than not, were abandoned.

Terms like hi line, pressing, closing down, touch tight, tracking all but forgotten or ignored. Defending is simple - it just requires effort. That's difficult to do when one's gasping for air. Last night, too many failed to correctly measure the length of their shift, according to their own personal fitness level, and that's why the game turned into a crapshoot.

The rule of thumb is this "when you come off, you should still have enough left in the tank to sprint the length of the field". If you don't, then you have selfishly been on too long and it's just a matter of time before you hurt the team! Hopefully, last night's debacle was just a blip on the radar and we learn from it.

Keeper Tare, again an octopus. Dan Perrin opened the scoring on a well struck free kick. Honorable mention goes to James Smith (1g),TJ(1g), John Woodill(1g) & Dallas. Once again we need to thank the play-ups who gave us the bench strength that this team requires to win - super senior 41 years young Roberto Pena was a calming influence and at the other end of the scale Foothills 16 year old Brendan Dueck, in his men's debut, acquitted himself well while D3's Andrew Milne blocked a lot of shots.

Heading into the bye week we've worked our way into 3rd place, a point behind second with a game in hand. Only two points separate 2nd from 6th This division is going to be a dogfight to the end!

A fantastic effort. From Tare, who, once again, was dominant in goal for us to the vets who set the tone right from the kickoff by getting stuck in all over the field to the U16 play-ups who continue to prove their worth. This result means that we no longer need help to finish in the top two - it's totally in our hands - which is all we wanted.

The night had a number of hilites ..... TJ's breakaway goal was Gretzky-like as he deked their keeper and patiently out waited him before finishing ..... the rocket that Julius threw his solar plexus in front of had everyone wincing - and Tare madly applauding ...... Rodrigo's bullets, resulting in 2 goals (and robbed of a hat trick because he shot it too bloody hard for the officials to see it) had some of the vets in my face asking why he doesn't play the point on the PP ...... Ramsay's shadowing job on Reyes was clinical (and there was nothing he could do about the goal) and admiring young Chris Genee's composure and defending ability.

Ingo's opening goal was a result of new shinguard's - no I'm not joking! The PK was perfect and the PP 1 for 2. We're working the breakouts better and it's starting to look like we know what we are doing on corners! The signs are encouraging.

Practice goes 8:30 - 10pm Sunday 3916 - 56th Ave at the Foothills Academy for those interested.

2-1 the final on a frustrating night for a Darts team trying to find their pre-xmas break form. From the KO Darts went at a depleted Centro squad who were missing their two leading scorers, all without much success! Breakdowns, cocking up set plays, loosing 50/50 tackles you name it Darts did it!

With the scoreboard showing 0-0 at the half and Centro's keeper the villain having kicked out two or three certain goals. The halftime talk and notion to spread the field was finally achieved eight minutes in to the second half, with leading scorer Alex Campos finishing a nice three way play for Darts.

Darts should have been able to have built on the lead but got themselves shot in the foot by being assessed a yellow for a dubious hand ball infraction. The resulting PK saw Centro even the count despite a solid defensive display and keeper Goran's heroics. Still unable to set up set plays and finish golden chances as the final minutes were played at a desperate pace with Centro holding everybody back while Darts buzzed around.

Fortunately for Darts cooler heads began to prevail with James Warshawski potting the winner with a couple of minutes to go much to everyone's relief on the bench. For the second game in a row Darts dogged a bullet, but they stay top of the heap and still undefeated. Darts Spurs next game isn't until Jan 30th when high flying Chinooks come calling.

Gentlemen, just looking at the CUSA stats and I'm impressed.

Darts Premier are in first place by 7 points and leading the Fairplay Award by 13 points!
Russo (10) is the leading scorer and they have the best D by 10 goals! Not bad for a bunch of kids!
In line for promotion to Major League.

Darts Spurs (Div 1) are unbeaten and top the table by 6 points, lead the Fairplay Award and have the top D as well!
Campos (10) is tied for the scoring lead while Mitch (7) and Sharpie (6) are in the top 5.
Should get promoted to Premier.

Darts Utd. (Div 2) After a dodgy start they have begun to make up ground, sit in 4th spot and are 3rd in Fairplay.
Not a top 20 scorer in sight but they are grinding out results by committee with a big help from the Foothills 95's!
A win against Vikings this week will put them firmly in contention for promotion.

Darts Gunners (Div 3A) were one minute away from being tied for first but sit 3 points back in 2nd place. The Fairplay Award is not in the cards. Jesus (6) and Koup (5) are top 10 in scoring and they have the 2nd best D.
The Gunners are a scrappy bunch. If they can win out they'll be in with a shot to win the league and get promoted.

Darts Olympics (Div 3B) Despite a lot of injuries they have remained competitive with a big assist from the Foothills 94's. As usual, Jean's boys are walking away with the Fairplay Award! Scoring is the problem. Hopefully they can sort it out and stay in the division.

Well done, keep fighting!  Larry

Two in row! Nothing glossy, just a workmanlike effort. We improved as the game progressed. New signing, keeper Tare Rennebohn, was a calming influence and kept things tidy throughout a scoreless first half. Danny B didn't even have to break stride on the opening goal so good was the weighted feed from Smitty (fresh off the boat from Scotland). As CJSC's frustrations mounted their discipline broke down and they gifted us 3 PP's for which they paid dearly. The powerplay on the night featured TJ in the middle, with wily vet Woodill and 16 year old Yassin Yusuf (in his Darts debut) working the corners, while play-up Curtis Contenti and Wharton manned the points. Their passing was crisp and decisive. The two PP markers by Woodill and Yassin gave us a comfortable three nil cushion. CJSC pulled one back due to some lax tracking but that only served to tighten up our defensive focus the rest of the way. Woodill added a 2nd to make it 4-1. The celebrating was tempered somewhat by the loss of Phillip Meintzer to a severely rolled ankle.

We still have it all to do but our play of late has been encouraging. There were a lot of positives. It was nice to have Dallas back after a long layoff, Smitty looks to be regaining his outdoor form, Woodill still has it, Danny B stepped up and Tare has proved to be a welcome addition. Craig and Julius were rarely troubled in the back. Ingo will be better with new shin-guards and if AK and Mo ever get fit we'll be fine up front. The kids continue to impress. After a dodgy opening half Yassin found his rhythm and ended up with a goal and 2 assists.
